“It’s not what you see that is art; art is the gap” wrote great Dadaist artist Marcel Duchamp. Art is always about the middle land we call relationship or encounter—the ineffable terrain of the in-between—that space we all know as real since we all feel most real when we’re there. At Cardea, we see this space as a kind of holy site, a secularly sacred realm in which we “encounter encounter,” or have a “relationship with relationship”. And we see it this way because we believe that it is in the land of the threshold where we come alive, experience the aliveness in others, and—again—encounter the life that courses between us. The famous theologian Martin Buber wrote that “All real living is meeting.” We think he’s exactly right. We meet in the deepest way through the making of art.

Join us Saturday, May 18th from 11am - 1pm for our sacred Art Temple at Cardea. A space to co-create art from a place of inner guidance, instead of guidelines. Expect no sermons, no hagiarchy or hierarchy, and only the graceful act of conjuring life through charcoal, paint, and clay. This space is fitting for anyone, no art experience required. We’ll meet each other in a place of creativity, improvisation, and connection. There is no ketamine at this event, and we invite kids of all ages to join, as they have a lot to teach us about play.

Our own Cardea cave walls painted by all the beautiful souls who have graced our space. Thank you to all who trusted us, gathered around a blank canvas as a means of intention setting through a creative expression. Our space is a living, breathing, forever changing, emblem of the creative impulse.

We’ve always been inspired by the Lascaux caves, more than 500 kilometers southwest of Paris, where lies an awe-inspiring collection of ancient art created by prehistoric cave dwellers more than 17,000 years ago. Paleontologists believe these remarkable cave paintings, which include more than 600 renderings of fauna known to Paleolithic humans, were part of a sacred space, christening the domed chamber where most of the art is found, the “prehistoric Sistine Chapel.” Drawn by Homo sapiens masters, the works in Lascaux are considered relatively “new” in the grand history of art, preceded by Homo neanderthalensis illustrations that date back a staggering 50,000 years prior.

Indeed, the creative impulse ran deep in our ancestors and their ancestors before them, and remains a fundamental aspect of who we are today.

Depression, anxiety, trauma and addiction treatments using psychedelics have become increasingly widespread, and enthusiasm among therapists and wellness professionals is growing at a rapid pace.
Unfortunately these treatments are often so expensive that they’re beyond the reach of large numbers of frontline individuals who dedicate their lives to helping others —individuals whose jobs often result in burnout, extreme stress, and vicarious trauma.
The mission of The Further Fund is trifold: to provide ketamine treatment for free to a wide variety of frontline care professionals who are positively impacting their communities; to hasten the healing impact of the psychedelic movement by training professionals in psychedelic therapies; and to support organizations who do good in the world.

Before your ketamine session, we’ll meet with you in our Winnicott room, named after our favorite British Psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. Two of our trained facilitators will join you in a “dialogic meeting” to help you contemplate and conceptualize your goals. Dialogic work is a form of deep inquiry in which the two facilitators reflect to each other based on their experience of you in the moment and prompt you to dive more deeply into your thoughts, based on your initial selection of images placed in front of you. Our aim is to help you deepen your own curiosity about your intention in a way that is highly individualized and reflective of your unique experience.

Influenced by a Finnish model called Open Dialogue, our facilitators are trained to avoid the certitude of expert formulations, analysis, and diagnosis in order to create the right environment for improvisational and the emergence of deep dialogues to occur. Working this way, we offer an innovative approach to an “old school” ethos, since we see psychotherapy as it was originally intended: an improvisational art form helping people contemplate “problems of living”.

Research on human change shows that real and sustained healing begins by looking beyond disease labels to a person’s unique relationship with their suffering.

We fear ketamine treatment is provided in a way that increasingly ignores this fact, focusing instead on medical diagnoses and quick-fix solutions through pharmaceuticals: it’s the age-old pitch of calling you “broken,” then offering a miracle cure.

We don’t focus on your labels, we don’t see you as diseased, and we certainly don’t promise any magic bullets. Our signature model focuses on your courage in the face of your challenges, and your humanity in your suffering as we walk beside you on your path towards growth.

Welcome to Cardea Space. Our unique interiors were carefully designed by artist @randypolumbo . Randy has designed and built Cardea’s Tribeca Ketamine Space in New York City to enhance the calming, novel and imaginative environment for transformative experiences. The space’s design materializes Cardea’s concept of “radical hospitality,” which places the guest and their goals at the visual, tactile, and acoustical center of the experience. All sensory interactions have been considered, from lighting, sound, scents and textures, leading each moment of a journey to a new discovery.
